Oldtimer-Meeting Baden-Baden celebrates 125 years of automobile 360 vintage cars transform Baden-Baden spa gardens into an open-air-museum

It’s that time again: From Friday, 8 July, to Sunday, 10 July, Baden-Baden is going to be the setting for the legendary Oldtimer-Meeting for the 35th time. The spa gardens of the city transform for three days into an impressive open-air-museum of automobile history. Special highlight this year: a big anniversary! 125 years of automobile have to be celebrated. With great success: the event is totally booked up. Altogether 360 vintage cars will arrive from whole Europe. Visitors may look forward to car classics from 84 different brands. A variety which one usually can gaze at in a museum – or at the Oldtimer-Meeting Baden-Baden!

Speaking of 125 years of automobile: honored guest brand this year is Mercedes-Benz. The inventor of the automobile celebrates his jubilee with a special show, which makes the yesterday, today and tomorrow of car history come alive. On the one hand, you get to see real classics: From the first automobile ever, the “Benz Patent-Motorwagen”, to the famous compressor-vehicles of the twenties and thirties to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. All of them magic moments of the car history. On the other hand, the future lures: The current Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the first electric version of the A-Class will be presented at Oldtimer-Meeting, too.

Both the Benz-Patent-Motorwagen and the modern Electro-A-Class will start for demonstration trials through the beautiful Kaiserallee several times a day. Also on board: an american Stanley Mountain Wagon from 1913. The vehicle is driven forward by steam power only and proves that already 100 years ago alternative drive systems were an issue for the people.

Another highlight are the nostalgic garden parties – on Friday evening the “Mercedes-Benz Night” and on Saturday “Oldies by Night”. The great special effect: More than 2.000 lampions draw attention to the vintage cars and transform the evening into a festival for the senses. Enjoying a night glow, jazz-music and fashion shows, the participants and visitors dance the night away.

On Saturday, 10 July, the 120 most beautiful vintage cars are awarded with prize cups during an award ceremony in the spa gardens of Baden-Baden.

Review of the 34th International Oldtimer-Meeting Baden-Baden: vibrant open-air museum of automobile history

From 9 to 11 July 2010, the 34th International Oldtimer-Meeting Baden-Baden opened its gates for all classic car enthusiasts. More than 363 classic cars of 84 brands could be seen at the Kurgarten. This was the largest variety of brands since the beginning of the Oldtimer-Meeting more than 30 years ago. The organizers were especially proud of the guest brand of honour 2010: the traditional brand Alfa Romeo. Baden-Baden celebrated 100 years Alfa Romeo with a special exhibition.

Again, the Oldtimer-Meeting lived up to its reputation as a vibrant open-air museum of automobile history. Even a
lternative drive configurations were a topic as the steam powered Milwaukee Steam Car from 1900 drove around the Kurgarten every day. Alexander Ivanov, founder of the Fabergé Museum, brought another highlight from Russia to Baden-Baden: his rare collection of ten American classic cars from the 1910s to the 1930s of brands like Packard, Oldsmobil, Pierce Arrow and Autocar.

The event traditionally is a Concours d'élégance automobile for cars constructed until 1970: a jury awarded prizes to the 120 most beautiful pieces of automobile jewellery. The award ceremony took place on Saturday afternoon and was the highlight and closure of the meeting. Before the ceremony, the 60 best placed cars were taking part in a corso through the city. First prices went to a Bugatti 57 Atalante from 1938 and to a Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Castagna from 1939. Moreover, in this Concours d'élégance, many different special cups were awarded in categories like "longest journey" and "most beautiful historical costume of drivers".

Thanks to Mediterranean temperature, visitors and participants of this year's Oldtimer-Meeting could not only witness the nostalgia of the old cars, but also enjoy nostalgic garden parties with an extensive social programme with fashion shows, jazz concerts and illuminations on Friday and Saturday evening.
